George Glauser '47

George Glauser’s father Harry Glauser, Sr., also attended St. Thomas College in 1907. George entered St. Thomas High School in 1942 as a first year Prep. Student. During the five years at St. Thomas, George played football and was on the track team under Father Carl Allnoch and Coach Tom Driscoll.

Coach Driscoll brought his football teams into parity with the large senior high school in Houston also played State schools like Robert E. Lee in Baytown and Port Arthur High School. In those years St. Thomas was recognized as a top quality football team and received top coverage from the Chronicle from Dick Freeman, the sports editor of the paper.

Because of this coverage George was given football scholarships to Notre Dame, Texas A&M and Tulane University, but chose Rice Institute on an academic scholarship and was given a football scholarship also. George played three years on the football team that won the Southwest Conference Championship and Cotton Bowl in 1949. George was able to play in the first game of the newly opened Rice stadium in 1950 with 85,000 in attendance and scored one of the first touchdowns.
