Robert T. Murski '69

Robert entered parochial school in the 7th grade at Annunciation and graduated from his home parish of Holy Name in the near northside of Houston. He entered St. Thomas in the fall of 1965 and at the freshman level played football, basketball, baseball, and ran track. He started and lettered three years on the varsity football team and was selected by his teammates a Tri-captain his senior year along with Greg Hall and Gary Martin. Robert was on two state champion football teams in 1966 and 1968 and one runner-up in 1967. He was named to the All-District team three years and was selected to the T.C.I.L. All-State Football Team his junior and senior year. Robert held a Texas high school football record for 11 years with six interceptions in a single game, which is still in the top five.

In addition to football, Robert started and lettered in varsity basketball his junior year, lettered three years in varsity track, running the 100, 220, 440, sprint relay, mile relay, long jump, and high jump. He was All-District three years and a member of the T.C.I.L. State Champion Mile Relay team of 1967 as a sophomore, along with Jack Laurenzo ‘68, David Sliva ‘67 and Roger Neugebauer ’67. The team ran a time of 3 minutes, 33 seconds, and his split time for that race was 49 seconds.

Prior to graduation from St.Thomas, Robert was recruited to play football by all Southwest Conference schools, Nebraska, LSU, Tennessee, the University of Houston, and Illinois. In the end, Texas A&M was his choice. Playing a freshman schedule the fall of 1969, the Aggie Fish were runner-up to the University of Texas for the conference championship. Robert was selected to the Freshman All S.W.C. team at defensive back.

In his sophomore year, 1970, he won a starting position mid way through the season at cornerback and special teams. He also lettered that year. In the season of 1971 he was moved to wide receiver and tight end. He started, lettered, and led the team in receptions with 15 catches. The following year, the 1972 season, brought a major coaching change and Robert was moved back to defense and won the punting duties for the team. He earned a starting position at cornerback and lettered. His senior season he was once honored as the “ Defensive Player of the Week” in an upset victory against top ten ranked University of Arkansas. At season’s end, Robert was selected to the A.P. first team All S.W.C. at defensive back and received honorable mention All-American recognition. In addition, he represented the Texas A&M football team as the nominee for the Kern Tips Award. In February, 1973, he signed a free agent contract with the Denver Broncos and was subsequently cut.
