Robert Paine '68
Robert Paine arrived at St. Thomas High School in the fall of 1964 from St Anne’s School as the third generation of his family to attend the high school. He played fresh¬man and junior varsity football and baseball. He lettered in track his junior and senior years. In his junior year he played on the 1966 TCIL State Champion football team and earned All-District in football, gaining over 1200 yards and leading the district in scoring. In his senior year as one of three captains on the team, he gained 1332 yards on 177 carries, averaged 7.5 yards per carry, scored 112 points and had a 43.8 yd punting average on 39 punts. He was named TCIL All-District, TCIL All-State, All-City, Catholic High School All American, Parade Magazine High School All American and was chosen by the Houston Chamber of Commerce Athletic Committee as a runner up as the Outstanding High School Athlete for 1967-68.
Robert attended the University of Texas on athletic scholarship after considering offers from all of the old Southwest Conference schools, LSU and Notre Dame. He started on the freshman team and was a member of the 1969 National Championship football team featuring the Wishbone formation. It was during this time that Texas experienced its 30 game winning streak. Due to injuries he elected to give up football after his sophomore year. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1972 with a BBA in Finance.
Robert met his wife Sara his senior year at the University of Texas and they married in 1975. They have two children, Meredith and Robert, both graduates of the University of Texas who now reside in Austin . Robert is a Managing Director of John L Wortham & Son, L.P., a private insurance brokerage firm located in Houston. He is a former member and past president of the St. Thomas High School Foundation Board.
