David F. Marr '50 +

Marr, who was inducted into the College Golf Hall of Fame in 1981, played golf at both Rice University and the University of Houston. He established himself as a premier professional golfer by winning four PGA tournaments, including the 1965 PGA Championship.

His record includes appearances on winning Ryder Cup teams as both a player and a coach, and a second place finish at the Masters in 1964 and a fourth place finish in the U.S. Open in 1966.

He also proved to be the quintessential golf analyst on television for 25 years, including 22 years at ABC, where he was known for his acute sense of timing, insightful comments and humorous input usually left viewers not only better informed but also smiling.

It was a mark of his prowess as an announcer that he fit in equally well on American and on British television. People liked Marr’s courteous style and his wit. But perhaps his most noble attribute was knowing exactly when to say nothing.
