Joe Wellborn '62

Joe Wellborn entered St. Thomas in the fall of 1958. He lettered in football two years and basketball one year. Joe also was named All-District in football his senior year, and was elected captain of the football team the same year.

Joe received a football scholarship from A&M College of Texas, which later became Texas A&M University. Starting at guard and linebacker position on the 1962 A&M freshman team, he continued as a linebacker on the 1963, 1964 and 1965 A&M Varsity teams. Joe started thirty straight games. In 1965 Joe was All SWC Linebacker, was elected captain of the football team, and was the first Aggie Heart Award Winner.

He played as center for the New York Giants of the NFL in 1966 and 1967 until an injury in 1967 ended his career. In 1968 he accepted the coaching position as Defensive Coordinator for the undefeated A&M freshman football team. The first St. Thomas athlete to play professional football, the determination and commitment Joe displayed on the football field has led to a successful career as a husband, father, businessman and entrepreneur.
